Messier 49 is a massive elliptical galaxy located in the constellation Virgo. It is also known by the names M49 or NGC 4472. This galaxy is a very bright object in the night sky. In fact, it is the most luminous member of the Virgo Cluster. It is even more luminous than any galaxy that is closer to Earth. Messier 49 belongs to a specific group called the Virgo B subcluster. This subcluster sits 4.5 degrees away from the center of the main Virgo Cluster. The center of that main cluster is located at Messier 87. 
The structure of Messier 49 contains many interesting features. Its core region produces a specific kind of energy called synchrotron energy. This energy comes from radio emissions. Scientists have detected about 10^53 erg of this energy in the core. This is also equal to 10^46 Joules. The nucleus of the galaxy emits X-rays as well. These X-rays suggest a supermassive black hole exists at the center. This black hole has an estimated mass of 565 million times the mass of our Sun. To the north of the galaxy, X-ray emissions show a structure called a bow shock. To the southwest of the core, the galaxy's outline extends 260 kpc away. 
One of the most striking parts of Messier 49 is its many globular clusters. A globular cluster is a dense group of stars. Messier 49 has about 5,900 of these clusters. This is a much larger number than our own Milky Way galaxy has. The Milky Way only has roughly 200 orbiting clusters. However, Messier 49 still has fewer than Messier 87, which has 13,450 clusters. On average, these globular clusters are very old. Most of them are about 10 billion years old. 
Astronomers have also found evidence of black holes within these star clusters. Between the years 2000 and 2009, scientists found strong evidence for a stellar mass black hole. This is a black hole that is smaller than a supermassive one. A second candidate for such a black hole was announced in 2011. These discoveries help us understand how black holes exist in different environments. They show that black holes can be found in both galaxy centers and within individual clusters. 
Messier 49 is not alone in space. It is currently interacting with a smaller neighbor. This neighbor is a dwarf irregular galaxy called UGC 7636. The two galaxies are interacting through gravity. Because of this pull, UGC 7636 shows a trail of debris. This trail spans roughly 1 by 5 arcminutes. This measurement corresponds to a physical dimension of 15 by 75 kiloparsecs. This interaction shows how large galaxies can shape the smaller ones near them. 
Exploding stars, known as supernovae, have also been seen in this galaxy. The first one was named SN 1969Q. An astronomer named Evans discovered it on 12 June 1969. The exact type of this supernova is unknown. The second observed supernova was named SN 2024kce. The Zwicky Transient Facility discovered it on 2 June 2024. This supernova was a Type Ia-pec, which is a specific kind of explosion. It was located at a projected distance of 120 kpc from the center of M49. 
Scientists study these explosions to learn about the materials inside stars. The spectra of SN 2024kce showed high amounts of calcium. This suggests it might be a calcium-rich supernova. In June 2025, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory imaged the area. They found that SN 2024kce and five other transients were still visible. Messier 49 was first discovered by the astronomer Charles Messier in 1777. He was the first person to find a member of the Virgo Cluster. His work helped map the many objects in our sky.
