The Mesosaurus was a small reptile that lived in the water.

Its name means "middle lizard." It lived about 275 million years ago. These animals lived near the shores of an ancient sea.

Mesosaurus had many parts to help it swim. It had a thin body and a long tail. Its limbs were like paddles. Its feet were webbed to push through the water. Its bones were very thick and heavy. This helped the animal stay stable near the surface.

It had a long snout with many small, pointy teeth. It used these teeth to catch small prey. These prey were often tiny sea bugs called crustaceans. The nostrils were on top of its head. This let it breathe while staying mostly underwater.

Finding Mesosaurus fossils helped scientists learn about our world. Fossils were found in South America and Africa. These two places are now very far apart. This discovery helped prove the theory of continental drift.

Some fossils even show babies inside their mothers. This suggests they might have given live birth.
