Her career shows how much she can do in the world of media.

As a host, Meredith has many important jobs to do. On the talk show The View, she was the original moderator. This meant she opened and closed the live episodes. She also introduced the "Hot Topics" and guided the conversations between the hosts. When she hosted the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, she had a special way of working. The producers wanted someone who would truly love and root for the contestants. She was a great fit for this role. She even helped produce the show as a co-executive producer.

Meredith's story began in Providence, Rhode Island. She was born on December 30, 1953. Her family had roots in the Azores, which is a group of nine islands. Her last name, Vieira, means "scallop" in Portuguese. Her father, Edwin, was a medical doctor. Her mother, Mary Elsie, was a homemaker. Meredith went to the Lincoln School and later graduated from Tufts University in 1975 with a degree in English. These early years helped prepare her for her big career.

Her professional life has included many famous names and places. She started in radio at WORC in Massachusetts before moving to local TV at WJAR-TV. Later, she worked for big networks like CBS and ABC. She hosted the show Intimate Portrait on the Lifetime network from 1994 to 2005. On the game show Millionaire, she hosted over 1,800 episodes. During that time, she helped contestants win a total of more than $70,000,000. She also won two Daytime Emmy Awards for her skill as a game show host.

Meredith's life also shows the effort it takes to balance work and family. She had three children while building her career. She once faced a hard time at the show 60 Minutes when she could not work full-time due to her children. This sparked a big national debate about women and their jobs. She also supported her husband, Richard M. Cohen, who lived with multiple sclerosis for over 50 years. Today, she still appears on television, such as on the game show 25 Words or Less.
