He was a rare talent who achieved the Triple Crown of Acting. Only 24 performers have ever accomplished this feat. This honor requires winning an Academy Award for film, a Tony Award for theater, and a Primetime Emmy Award for television. Douglas earned two Academy Awards, both in the Best Supporting Actor category. He also won a Tony Award for his role in the 1960 play The Best Man. His ability to master different mediums made him a staple of the Golden Age of Hollywood and beyond.

Douglas was born Melvyn Edouard Hesselberg on April 5, 1901, in Macon, Georgia. His father, Edouard Gregory Hesselberg, was a concert pianist and composer from Riga, Latvia. His mother, Lena Priscilla Shackelford, was a Protestant and a descendant of the Mayflower. Douglas did not learn about his Jewish heritage until he was 14 years old. His parents had preferred to keep this part of his background private. However, his paternal aunts eventually shared the truth with him. He felt a deep admiration for them and treated them like his own mothers.

To build his professional identity, Douglas took the surname of his maternal grandmother. He began his training in Shakespearean repertory during his teenage years. He gained practical experience working with stock companies in several cities. These included Sioux City, Iowa, and Evansville, Indiana, as well as Madison, Wisconsin, and Detroit, Michigan.

During World War I, he served in the United States Army. Later, during World War II, he served again in the Army. He rose to the rank of major in the Special Services Entertainment Production Unit. He also directed the Arts Council in the Office of Civilian Defense.

His acting career can be divided into distinct stages of character types. In his early years, he was a suave and sophisticated leading man. He starred in the 1932 horror film The Vampire Bat and the 1935 film She Married Her Boss. He famously appeared with Greta Garbo in the 1939 romantic comedy Ninotchka.

As he matured, his roles shifted toward fatherly and elder characters. He won an Academy Award for playing Homer Bannon in the 1963 film Hud. He later won a second Academy Award for his role as Benjamin Rand in the 1979 film Being There. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for I Never Sang for My Father in 1970.

Douglas's life was also defined by his political and social convictions. In 1931, he married the actress and politician Helen Gahagan. After traveling to Europe, the couple became outspoken anti-fascists due to the anti-Semitism they witnessed. Douglas was also an active member of the Democratic Party in California. His wife, Helen Gahagan Douglas, became a three-term congresswoman. She famously ran against Richard M. Nixon for a U.S. Senate seat in 1950. During this era, Nixon used the nickname "Tricky Dick" to describe her, a term she actually popularized.

Beyond the screen, Douglas was involved in various community and international efforts. In the 1970s, he served on the executive committee of the Writers and Artists for Peace in the Middle East. This was a pro-Israel group. His personal life included a home in Los Angeles designed by architect Roland Coate in 1938. He had two children with Helen, Peter Gahagan Douglas and Mary Helen Douglas. He also had a son, Melvyn Gregory Hesselberg, from a brief marriage to artist Rosalind Hightower. His granddaughter is the actress Illeana Douglas.

Melvyn Douglas passed away in 1981 at the age of 80. He died at Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City due to pneumonia and cardiac complications. His final film role was in the 1981 horror movie Ghost Story. He also had an uncompleted role in the 1982 film The Hot Touch, which required editing after his death. His legacy is recognized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He has two stars located on Hollywood Boulevard, one for his film work and one for his television work.
