Many people live on islands in the sea.
Many people live on islands in the sea.
People moved to these lands a long time ago. Some people came from far away. They brought new ways to talk.
There are many different groups of people. Some groups speak one way. Other groups speak a different way.
Some children there have blond hair. This is very special. It is not like hair in other places.
Melanesia is a very big and diverse place.
Melanesia is a large area of islands in the sea.
People first moved to these lands a very long time ago. Some people arrived between 50,000 and 37,000 years ago. Later, more people arrived from other places. These new groups brought the Austronesian languages.
Because of this long history, there is much variety. People speak many different languages. Some groups speak Papuan languages. Others speak Austronesian languages.
Some people in Melanesia have blond hair. This is a special trait. It happened on its own in these islands. It is not the same as hair in Europe.
Scientists also study the history of these people through DNA. They found that ancient ancestors of Melanesians met a group called Denisovans. This group is a cousin to the Neanderthals.
Melanesia is a large area of islands in the Pacific Ocean.
History shows that people have lived in this area for a very long time.
Scientists use DNA to learn more about these ancient movements.
Researchers also study how different island groups are related.
There are many interesting facts about life in Melanesia today.
Melanesians are the primary indigenous inhabitants of Melanesia. This region spans a large area of the Pacific Ocean. It stretches from the island of New Guinea to the Fiji Islands.
The history of these people begins tens of thousands of years ago. Scientists believe the first settlers reached Sahul during the Initial Upper Paleolithic period. Sahul was a massive geological continent. It consisted of what we now know as Australia and New Guinea. These people arrived between 50,000 and 37,000 years ago.
Newer arrivals changed the cultural landscape of the islands. More than 3,000 years ago, Austronesian peoples migrated into the area. They settled along the north coast of New Guinea. They also moved into islands north and east of New Guinea. These migrants created what is known as the Lapita culture. They came into contact with the existing Papuan-speaking populations. This interaction lasted for a long time. It resulted in complex changes in genetics, languages, and culture.
A major study in 2010 used genome scans to test these theories. The study looked at more than 800 genetic markers. It found that Polynesians and Micronesians have little genetic relation to Melanesians. Instead, those groups are strongly related to East Asians. Specifically, they show links to Taiwanese aborigines. The ancestors of Polynesians likely used sailing outrigger canoes. They moved through the Melanesian area very quickly. They were on their way to eastern islands. Because they moved so fast, they left very little genetic evidence behind. They only intermixed with indigenous populations to a very modest degree.
Genetic diversity in Melanesia is remarkably high. People are distinguished by the islands they live on. They are also distinguished by topography and island size. Papuan-speaking groups show the highest rates of genetic differentiation. Austronesian-speaking groups along the coastlines show more intermixing.
Melanesians also share a connection to an ancient human species. This species is called the Denisovans. They are considered cousins to the Neanderthals. The Denisovans migrated east about 400,000 years ago.
Today, Melanesia remains a region of significant populations and activity. Papua New Guinea is the largest and most populous country in the area. Its largest city is Port Moresby. It has about 318,000 people, most of whom have Melanesian ancestry.
