Many things can cause this change. New science or new medicines can lead the way. Changing ideas in society can also cause it. This can help people live better lives. It can help treat symptoms that cause pain.

But some people worry about this. They think it can be a form of social control. This means doctors or groups gain power over how we live. Some thinkers say it turns normal life into a sickness. For example, they say things like grief or aging are natural. They do not think these should always be treated as diseases.

Other people look at how companies act. They worry that companies make new diseases to sell more drugs. This is sometimes called disease mongering. This means making a problem seem bigger to sell medicine.
