Mechatronics engineering is a highly specialized field that focuses on the synergistic integration of multiple engineering disciplines.

Rather than looking at mechanics or electronics in isolation, mechatronics seeks to unify these subfields into a single, cohesive design solution. This approach combines mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, and computer science. By doing so, engineers can create systems that are simpler, more economical, and more reliable than those built using traditional methods. The goal is to optimize the functionality of a product through this deep integration.

To understand how a mechatronic system functions, one must look at the continuous control loop. This process begins with a sensor that gathers specific information from the environment. This data is then sent to an information processing unit, which acts as the system's brain. Once the data is processed, the system sends a command to an actuator. The actuator then performs a physical action, resulting in a mechanical change in the real world.

This cycle repeats constantly to regulate the system. This mechanism is what allows a camera to autofocus or an anti-lock braking system to function safely.

Mechatronics is composed of several distinct subdisciplines that work together. Mechanical engineering provides the physical structure and movement through study of dynamics and fluid mechanics. Engineers in this area may specialize in hydraulics or pneumatics, which are often used in the automobile industry. Electronics and telecommunications engineering focus on the transmission of signals and the design of hardware. This includes working with microprocessors, microcontrollers, and semiconductors. Control engineering is another vital part, as it uses algorithms to regulate systems. These algorithms can range from the flight propulsion systems in airplanes to the cruise control in modern cars.

The history of the term mechatronics is rooted in Japan. The word is a portmanteau, meaning it is a blend of the words "mechanics" and "electronics." It was created by Tetsuro Mori, an engineer at the Yaskawa Electric Corporation. While the term appeared in an advertisement for Servomechanisms, Inc. as early as 1951, it was officially registered as a trademark by Yaskawa in 1971. Eventually, the company released the right to use the word to the public. This allowed the term to be adopted globally and translated into many different languages.

One major branch of this field is avionics, which is a blend of "aviation" and "electronics."

Avionics focuses specifically on the electronic systems used in aircraft. These systems include air navigation, flight control, weather radar, and collision avoidance. These can range from a simple searchlight on a helicopter to very complex tactical systems. Another emerging field is robotics, which is the study of how robots are manufactured and operated.

Robotics is closely related to automation because it requires very little human intervention.

Industrial engineering is also a significant part of the mechatronics landscape. Industrial engineers act as the architects of machines, designing the machinery and assembly lines for manufacturing plants.

They develop the infrastructure that allows for large-scale production. In modern factories, particularly in the automobile industry, mechatronic modules are integrated according to specific control architectures. These architectures can be organized in different ways, such as hierarchy, polyarchy, heterarchy, or hybrid systems. This allows for flexible and agile manufacturing processes.

Finally, mechatronics is increasingly connected to the Internet of Things, or IoT. The IoT involves the inter-networking of physical devices that are embedded with software, sensors, and actuators. These devices collect and exchange data across networks. Because many smart components in the IoT are essentially mechatronic, the rise of this technology forces engineers to study new challenges. These include data security, machine ethics, and the human-machine interface. To succeed in these areas, engineers must be proficient in programming languages such as Java, Python, C++, and C.
