Air travel relies on airfields like Phoenix Airfield and Williams Field. These runways are built directly on the ice. The station also features a heliport and a refueling station at Marble Point.

McMurdo is named after Lieutenant Archibald McMurdo. He was an officer on the ship *Terror*. The area was first charted in 1841 by explorers Francis Crozier and James Clark Ross. In 1902, Robert Falcon Scott established a base camp nearby. He built a cabin known as Discovery Hut. This hut still stands as a historic monument on Hut Point. The station sits on volcanic rock. This site is the southernmost bare ground accessible by ship in the world.

Energy production at the station has changed over time. Today, the base uses a mixture of generators and wind power. In the 1960s, the station used a small nuclear reactor called the PM-3A.

This reactor provided 1.8 megawatts of power. It also powered a desalination plant. This plant produced about 14,000 gallons of fresh water from seawater every day. The reactor was eventually turned off due to concerns about stress corrosion. Currently, diesel generators provide power and heat for the buildings.
