They proposed an ideal design with a thrust-to-weight ratio near 1:1. This ratio means the engine's thrust is nearly equal to the aircraft's weight. Such a balance allows the jet to accelerate vertically and maintain energy during tight turns. The F-15 was designed to meet these high-performance requirements.
The development process was accelerated by fears of Soviet technology. In 1967, the Soviet Union unveiled the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25. This aircraft was a high-speed, high-altitude interceptor. It used stainless steel instead of aluminum to handle extreme speeds exceeding Mach 2.8. To observers, the MiG-25 appeared to outclass existing American fighters in speed and endurance. This created an urgent need for a new American air superiority design. The Air Force eventually finalized its requirements in October 1965.
