McDonald Islands

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The McDonald Islands are an uninhabited archipelago located in the southern Indian Ocean. They are part of an Australian external territory known as Heard Island and McDonald Islands. These islands are actually the emergent peaks of submarine volcanoes. This means the volcanoes rise from beneath the ocean surface to form land. They sit atop a massive underwater feature called the Kerguelen Plateau.

The archipelago consists of several distinct geological features. The main group includes McDonald Island, Flat Island, Needle Island, and Meyer Rock. McDonald Island is the largest of these landmasses. It has become the primary site of volcanic activity in recent years. Originally, Flat Island was a separate, low-lying island near McDonald Island. However, recent volcanic activity has caused the two to merge into one.

Other features in the area include smaller rock formations. Needle Island is a small pinnacle rock or outcrop. It sits just 0.4 kilometers offshore from McDonald Island. Meyer Rock is even more remote. It is a pinnacle rock located about 2 kilometers northwest of the main island. This makes it the most distant feature in the archipelago. The islands are composed of various volcanic materials. These include phonolitic low-silica pumice, dikes, and lava domes.

For a very long time, these volcanoes were dormant. No eruptions had occurred at the McDonald Islands for 75,000 years prior to 1992. This long period of quiet ended with a series of modern eruptions. In December 1992, a small submarine eruption occurred from a vent. This was a VEI-0 eruption, which is a very low level of activity. This event likely caused pumice to wash up on the shores of nearby Heard Island.

Significant volcanic activity continued through the late 1990s. In December 1996, a pilot spotted a vapour plume in the sky. While some thought it came from Heard Island, observations in 1997 confirmed activity on McDonald Island. Ship crews reported steam rising from a fissure on the north face. They also saw lava flows traveling down gullies. These flows covered a large area of the northern part of the island.

New eruptions changed the physical shape of the islands again in 2001. A passing ship observed material being ejected from the flanks. Steam was also issuing from near the summit crater. This activity covered the island in dark, smooth material. It also filled in certain areas, such as Williams Bay. The eruptions added land to Windward Point and joined Flat Island to McDonald Island. A new volcanic cone was also created during this time.

Recent observations show that the islands remain geologically active. In July 2005, satellite imagery detected an eruption on the northwest shore. This event may have added a small amount of new area to the island. By 2002, researchers also noted the formation of two new lava domes. These islands have transformed from flat, green landscapes into rugged, volcanic peaks. Before these eruptions, the pumice beaches were vital nesting areas for breeding penguins.

The McDonald Islands are globally recognized for their unique environment. They are a designated World Heritage Site. To protect the area, a marine reserve was established in 2002. This reserve was expanded in 2014, and officials considered further expansion in 2024. Even remote territories can face global political changes. In April 2025, the United States announced a 10% tariff on the islands. This tariff is the same rate applied to the rest of Australia.
