This means it is part of France and the European Union. It even uses the euro, which is the money used in much of Europe. The islands consist of a large main island called Grande-Terre and a smaller one called Petite-Terre.

There are also many smaller islets scattered around them.

The islands were formed by powerful volcanoes millions of years ago.

In the south, volcanic activity began about 7.7 million years ago. In the north, it started about 4.7 million years ago. This volcanic history created very rich soil that helps many plants grow. Today, Mayotte has more than 1,300 different plant species. About half of these plants are endemic, which means they are found nowhere else on Earth.

While the island has many plants, it has fewer types of mammals. The only native mammals are called flying foxes.

A massive coral reef circles the islands like a protective ring.

This reef creates a huge lagoon, which is a shallow area of water near the coast. This lagoon is one of the largest and deepest in the world. The reef is very important because it protects the islands from big ocean waves. It also provides a safe home for many living things. Scientists have found at least 760 types of tropical fish living there.

There are also at least 250 different types of coral.

People have lived in Mayotte for a very long time. Long ago, people moved there from East Africa. Later, Arabs arrived and brought the religion of Islam.

In 1841, the islands were sold to France. Mayotte chose to stay with France even after its neighbor, the Comoros, became independent in 1974. Today, many people speak French, but Shimaore is the most common native language. The largest city is Mamoudzou, located on Grande-Terre.

Life in Mayotte can be quite busy and crowded. Many people live very close together on the small land area.

Because the islands are part of France, they have French systems for things like roads and schools. However, Mayotte is also the poorest department in France. Many people face hard jobs or do not have running water in their homes. In recent years, many people from neighboring places have moved to Mayotte to find better lives. This has made the population grow quickly, with many young people living on the islands.

Mayotte is an overseas department and region of France.

It is also a single territorial collectivity within the French system. This unique status means Mayotte is part of the French Republic. It is also an outermost region of the European Union. Because it is a French department, it belongs to the eurozone. This means Mayotte uses the euro as its official currency.

Located in the western Indian Ocean, Mayotte sits in the northern Mozambique Channel. It lies between the northwestern coast of Madagascar and northeastern Mozambique. The territory consists of a large main island called Grande-Terre, or Maore. It also includes a smaller island named Petite-Terre, or Pamanzi. Many smaller islets surround these two primary islands.

The islands were formed through complex volcanic activity.

Geological evidence shows two distinct volcanic centers on the islands. The southern center is known as Pic Chongui. This center has a breached crater located to its northwest. The northern center is called Mont M'Tsapéré. Its crater is breached on the southeast side. Volcanic activity in the south began roughly 7.7 million years ago. This activity ceased about 2.7 million years ago. In the north, activity started about 4.7 million years ago. This northern volcanic phase lasted until about 1.4 million years ago. The most recent ash band suggests activity as recently as 7,000 years ago. This volcanic history created fertile soil across the islands.

Mayotte is surrounded by a massive marine environment. A large outer barrier reef encircles much of the territory.

This reef creates a huge lagoon behind it. This lagoon is one of the largest and deepest in the world. It reaches a maximum depth of about 80 meters. The reef protects the islands from strong ocean currents. It also provides a safe habitat for many marine species. Scientists have recorded at least 250 species of coral there. There are also at least 760 species of tropical fish. The National Natural Heritage Inventory has identified 3,616 marine species. However, scientists believe many more species remain unknown to science.

The terrestrial environment is also very diverse. Mayotte is home to more than 1,300 plant species.

Ripisylve Mayotte.jpg
Ripisylve Mayotte.jpg
About half of these plants are endemic to the islands. This means they grow nowhere else on Earth. Because of this, Mayotte has high plant diversity for its size. The island also supports various animals like reptiles and insects. There are 18 species of reptiles and 116 types of butterflies. The only native mammals are flying foxes. While 15% of the land is a natural reserve, illegal deforestation has reduced the primal forest. Today, the primal forest covers only about 5% of the island.

The history of Mayotte involves many different groups of people. Early populations arrived from neighboring East Africa. Later, Arab arrivals introduced the religion of Islam. A sultanate was established on the islands in 1500. In the 19th century, the former king of Iboina, Andriantsoly, conquered the islands. He sold Mayotte to France in 1841. This occurred during the reign of King Louis Philippe I. After French sovereignty began, slavery was abolished in the area. Laborers were then imported to work on local plantations. In 1974, Mayotte chose to remain with France. This decision came after the nearby Comoros declared independence.

Mayotte has undergone significant political changes recently. On March 31, 2011, it officially became the 101st department of France. On January 1, 2014, it became an outermost associated region of the European Union. This followed a March 2009 referendum with an overwhelming result. Today, the population is very dense. There are 320,901 people as of January 2024 estimates. This equals 858 inhabitants per square kilometer. The population is also very young. In 2019, half of the population was under 17 years old. This rapid growth is partly due to an annual growth rate of 3.8%.

Despite its status, Mayotte faces many modern challenges. It is the poorest department in France.

Many people live in difficult conditions. A 2018 report showed over 83% of people live below the French poverty line. This is much higher than the 16% poverty rate in metropolitan France. About 40% of dwellings are shacks made of corrugated sheet metal. Additionally, 29% of households lack running water. Illegal immigration from the Comoros has become a major political issue. This has led to government actions like Operation Wuambushu. These challenges affect the many residents living in crowded shanty towns.
