The May Revolution was a week of intense political change in May 1810.

These events took place in Buenos Aires, the capital of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. At that time, this territory included much of modern-day Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The revolution resulted in the removal of Viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros.

In his place, a local government known as the Primera Junta was established on May 25. This movement was a turning point in history. It launched the Argentine War of Independence and influenced other independence movements across South America.

Several international factors caused the crisis in Spain. In 1808, Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Spain and forced King Ferdinand VII to abdicate.

Napoleon then placed his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, on the Spanish throne. This created a crisis of legitimacy for Spanish officials in the Americas. A group called the Supreme Central Junta tried to resist the French occupation. However, they eventually lost control of northern Spain. By February 1810, French troops had captured Seville.

The Spanish government retreated to Cádiz and formed the Council of Regency. When news of these collapses reached Buenos Aires via British ships on May 18, the local leaders knew the political situation had changed forever.

Local tensions in the Viceroyalty had been growing for many years. Spain enforced strict trade rules that forced colonies to trade only with the Spanish mother country.

This system caused economic recessions and shortages in Buenos Aires. To survive, many people engaged in smuggling to obtain necessary goods. This created a divide between landowners, who wanted free trade, and merchants, who profited from high prices on smuggled items. Furthermore, a social rivalry existed between peninsulars and criollos. Peninsulars were people born in Spain, while criollos were people of Spanish descent born in the Americas. Criollos often felt they were denied the political power and high-ranking offices given to those born in Europe.

New ideas from the Atlantic Revolutions also shaped the minds of many criollos. The American Revolution of 1776 showed that colonies could successfully win independence.

The French Revolution of 1789 spread concepts of equality and challenged the divine right of kings. Although Spain tried to ban these liberal books and ideas, they still spread through universities and trade routes. Many enlightened criollos studied these works in Europe or at the University of Chuquisaca. They began to question why a distant government should make all their decisions. This intellectual shift provided the foundation for the political actions taken in May 1810.

Military experiences also boosted the confidence of the local population. In 1806 and 1807, British forces invaded the Río de la Plata.

The Spanish crown provided no help during these invasions. Instead, local leaders like Santiago de Liniers organized criollo militias to defend the territory.

The largest of these was the Patricios Regiment, led by Cornelio Saavedra. These victories proved that the criollos could defend themselves without Spanish assistance. This newfound military power gave them the leverage needed to challenge the Viceroy's authority.

On May 22, 1810, the revolution moved into its decisive stage.

They debated whether Viceroy Cisneros still had the right to rule. Since the Spanish government that appointed him had been replaced, the delegates argued his authority had vanished. The revolutionaries refused to recognize the Council of Regency in Spain. They decided to establish their own local government. While Cisneros was briefly named president to maintain continuity, popular unrest forced his resignation on May 25.

The aftermath of the revolution was complex and often violent. A secessionist civil war broke out between regions that supported Buenos Aires and those loyal to Spain. Historians still debate the true motives of the revolutionaries. This is often called the "mask of Ferdinand." Some believe the leaders were truly loyal to King Ferdinand VII. Others argue that claiming loyalty was a ruse to hide their real goal of total independence. Regardless of their intent, the revolution set a permanent course for change. The formal Argentine Declaration of Independence would not arrive until the Congress of Tucumán on July 9, 1816.
