Maxim Gorky was a famous Russian writer.

Maxim Gorky was a famous Russian writer who wanted to change the world.
His life was full of many different experiences. Gorky became an orphan when he was only eleven years old. He left home at age twelve and traveled on foot. He spent five years walking across the Russian Empire. During this time, he worked many different jobs. He was even a shoemaker's apprentice. These many jobs helped him gather ideas for his books. In 1895, he chose the name Maxim Gorky. The name Gorky means "bitter" in Russian. He chose it to show his anger about life in Russia.
As he grew, Gorky became a very important literary figure. He met and knew famous writers like Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov.
He wrote many books that people still talk about today. His early short stories like "Makar Chudra" were very successful.
Later in life, Gorky had a complicated relationship with the government. He lived in many places, including the island of Capri in Italy.
Maxim Gorky was a prominent Russian and Soviet writer and a dedicated proponent of socialism.
Born Alexei Maximovich Peshkov in Nizhny Novgorod, Gorky faced a difficult childhood. He became an orphan at the age of eleven. In 1880, at age twelve, he ran away from home. After an unsuccessful suicide attempt in 1887, he spent five years traveling on foot across the Russian Empire. During this period, he worked many menial jobs, including a stint as a shoemaker's apprentice. These varied experiences provided the raw material for his future writing. In 1895, he adopted the pseudonym Maxim Gorky. The name Gorky, meaning "bitter" in Russian, reflected his anger regarding life in Russia.
Gorky's literary rise was marked by significant connections to other great thinkers. He associated with famous Russian writers such as Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov.

His political activism often brought him into direct conflict with authority. Gorky publicly opposed the Tsarist regime and was arrested multiple times. In 1902, he was elected an honorary Academician of Literature, but Tsar Nicholas II ordered the appointment annulled. This event caused Anton Chekhov and Vladimir Korolenko to leave the academy in protest. Gorky also became a personal friend of Vladimir Lenin. He supported the Bolshevik wing of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. During the 1905 Revolution, he assisted the Moscow uprising. Following the suppression of the uprising, his apartment was raided by the Black Hundreds.
Gorky's bibliography includes several works that shaped his career. His early short stories from the 1890s, such as "Makar Chudra," achieved sensational success. He also wrote the influential play *The Lower Depths* in 1902. His autobiographical trilogy includes *My Childhood* and *In the World, My Universities*. In 1906, he wrote the novel *Mother*, which became famous for its themes of revolutionary struggle. Interestingly, Gorky himself considered *Mother* to be one of his biggest failures. Critics have offered warmer appraisals for his later works. These include *The Artamonov Business* and *The Life of Klim Samgin*, which some view as a modernist masterpiece.
For much of his life, Gorky lived in exile to escape Russian repression. Between 1909 and 1911, he resided in the burgundy-colored Villa Behring on the island of Capri, Italy.

Upon his return, Gorky was officially declared the "founder of Socialist Realism." This was a specific style of art and literature in the Soviet Union. However, his relationship with the Soviet regime was often difficult and strained. While he was a public supporter of Stalin, he maintained friendships with leaders like Nikolai Bukharin. These men were later executed as part of the anti-Stalin opposition. Gorky also attempted to defend writers who disobeyed strict cultural policies. These efforts resulted in him spending his final days under unannounced house arrest. His political involvement means many of his post-revolutionary works remain largely unknown in the West.
