His literary career evolved through several distinct stages. He first gained acclaim with a semi-autobiographical trilogy. This included Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth, published between 1852 and 1856. These works explored the gap between the nobility and the peasants. Later, he moved into epic realism with his masterpiece, War and Peace, in 1869. He also wrote significant novellas like The Death of Ivan Ilyich.

This led him to become a Christian anarchist and a dedicated pacifist. He believed in nonviolent resistance to injustice. This philosophy was detailed in his book, The Kingdom of God Is Within You, published in 1894. He also advocated for Georgism, an economic philosophy by Henry George.
