Max Ophüls was a famous film director. He was born in Germany. He also worked in France and the United States. He made nearly 30 films during his life.

Max was known for a very special style. He loved to move the camera in smooth ways. He used tracking shots. These are shots where the camera moves along a track. He also used a crane. A crane is a tall tool that lets a camera move up and down. These tools made his films look grand and beautiful. One actor once said that Max loved these moving shots very much.

Max often told stories about women. Many of his female characters had names that started with the letter L. This included names like Leonora, Lisa, and Lola. Some people call his work "woman's films" because of this.

He faced hard times as a refugee. He had to leave Germany because of the Nazi party. He moved to France and became a citizen there. Later, he moved to Hollywood in the United States. He won a BAFTA Award for his film La Ronde. This was a big honor for his work.
