People often called him "The Cheeky Chappie" because of his charm and funny jokes. He was a huge star in large music halls and variety theaters. He was loved for his energy and his bright, colorful clothing. He often wore flamboyant suits with plus-fours and a kipper tie.

His goal was always to make the audience laugh and enjoy the show.

A typical performance by Miller lasted between 20 and 30 minutes. It usually began with an orchestra playing his special song, "Mary from the Dairy." He would wait behind the curtain for a few seconds to build excitement. When he finally walked out, he would stand at the microphone in his colorful outfit. He used a style of joking called double entendre. This means he used words that could have two meanings. He often left out the last word of a joke so the audience could finish it. He also sang songs and sometimes did a soft shoe shuffle dance.

Miller did not become a star overnight. He had to work very hard through a long period of practice. He was born Thomas Henry Sargent in Brighton in 1894. His family was poor, so he left school when he was only 12 years old. He worked many different jobs like delivering milk and selling fish and chips. During the First World War, he volunteered for the army. While serving, he started a concert party to perform for the troops.

This experience helped him find his path as a performer.

His career grew as he moved from small shows to big stages. In 1919, he joined a concert party on the Brighton beach. It was there that he met his wife, Kathleen Marsh. She was a singer and helped him manage his career. She even suggested he use the stage name Max Miller. By the early 1930s, he was performing at the famous London Palladium. He also appeared in 14 different films. One of his most famous films was called "Hoots Mon!" which was made in 1940.

Miller's life changed as the world changed. He was a master of live theater and large crowds. However, the rise of television made variety theater less popular. He found that the new medium of television did not suit his style very well. He needed the immediate reaction of a live audience to feel successful. He died in 1963 at the age of 68. Even though the era of music halls ended, people still remember him as a great entertainer.
