In 1979, Maurice's party took control of the government. He became the Prime Minister of Grenada. He started many new programs to help the people. He made sure women got equal pay and maternity leave. He also helped create groups for health care and youth. One of his biggest projects was building a new international airport. This airport was built with help from Cuba.
Even though he did many good things, there was still much trouble. Some people in his own government did not agree with him. In October 1983, a man named Bernard Coard led a coup. A coup is when people take power by force. Maurice was removed from his job and killed during this time. This event caused his government to end very quickly. Bishop returned to Grenada in December 1970. He immediately began working as a lawyer for the people. He defended striking nurses who wanted better hospital conditions. In 1973, he helped form the New JEWEL Movement. This group grew from smaller organizations like JEWEL and OREL. However, the period was very violent for the NJM. On November 18, 1973, an event called "Bloody Sunday" occurred. Police and a paramilitary group called the Mongoose Gang arrested Bishop and others. They beat the men almost to the point of death. 
More violence followed on January 21, 1974, known as "Bloody Monday." During a protest against Prime Minister Eric Gairy, security forces used tear gas and stones. Bishop's father, Rupert, was shot and killed by the Mongoose Gang. This tragedy changed the NJM's strategy. Instead of just holding demonstrations, they began organizing local party cells. In 1976, Bishop was elected to Parliament. He served as the Leader of the Opposition until the revolution began. 
On March 13, 1979, the NJM staged a revolution. They removed Prime Minister Gairy from office and formed the People's Revolutionary Government. As Prime Minister, Bishop started many social programs. He helped create the National Women's Organization. This led to women receiving equal pay and maternity leave. He also established groups for health care and youth affairs. One major project was building a new international airport. This project used labor and financing from Cuba. 
Bishop's government faced many criticisms during this time. He did not hold elections, arguing the economy needed to be stable first. Some people believed the People's Revolutionary Army was used to hurt political opponents. He also limited the freedom of the press. In October 1983, internal conflict led to a coup. Deputy Prime Minister Bernard Coard engineered this takeover. Bishop was deposed and executed during the coup. This event caused the People's Revolutionary Government to end quickly.
