Mathematical notation

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Imagine you want to explain a big idea about how things move or grow. Using only words can be very slow and confusing. Instead, mathematicians use a special set of marks called notation.

These symbols act like a secret code for numbers and shapes. They can represent operations, which are ways to change numbers. They also show relations between different things. This notation helps scientists and engineers share hard ideas clearly. It makes complex thoughts look short and accurate.

Notation works much like a real language. In a sentence, words can be nouns or verbs. In math, symbols play similar roles. Some letters act as names for objects. Other symbols show what to do, like adding or dividing.

You might use letters from the Latin or Greek alphabets. Sometimes, people even use Hebrew or Cyrillic letters. Even small changes matter in this code. A large letter and a small letter can mean different things. Different styles of writing can change the meaning too. You can even add tiny marks above or below a letter to give it more detail.

People have been finding ways to track numbers for a very long time. Some believe notation for numbers started 50,000 years ago. Early people used rocks, sticks, or even knotted ropes to count.

The Ishango Bone from Africa is an old example of using marks. For a long time, math was mostly written out in long sentences. This was called rhetorical math. In the late 1500s, François Viète began using symbols for unknown numbers. This was a huge step forward for math history.

Many famous thinkers helped build the notation we use today. René Descartes used the letter x for numbers we do not know yet. He also used the letter a for numbers that stay the same.

In the 1700s, Leonhard Euler created many symbols used in classrooms now. He helped make the symbol π popular for a special number. There are even rules for how to write these marks. The ISO 80000-2 standard says to use slanted letters for variables. A variable is just a symbol that stands in for a number. This keeps everything organized for everyone in the world.

Math notation connects to the way we see the world. Think about a map of the Earth. The map is not the actual ground, but it represents it.

In math, the symbol "4" is not the number itself. It is just a way to show the number to others. We use expressions to group symbols together. We use formulas to make statements about those groups. These tools allow us to turn big, messy ideas into neat, logical patterns.
