These guns used a burning string. A person pulled a lever. This made the fire touch the powder. Then the gun would fire.

This was better than old hand guns. A person could stay focused on their aim. They did not have to hold a flame by hand.

But the burning string had problems. It was hard to use in the rain. The wet string would not stay lit.

The glowing string could also show where a person was. It would shine in the dark. It also had a strong smell.

These guns were used in many lands. People used them in Japan and China. They were even used by nomads in Tibet.
