Long ago, the word had a different meaning. It was a test for workers. These workers were called apprentices. They wanted to join a guild. A guild is a group of experts in a craft. To join, an apprentice had to make a masterpiece. They might make a gold ring or a fine cup.

If the guild liked the work, they kept it. This helped the worker become a master. Some guilds even had strict rules. In some places, apprentices could not marry until they joined. Today, we use the word for many things. A great book can be a masterpiece. A song or a film can be one too. It is a way to show your best talent.
