Masonry is the craft of building with stone, brick, or concrete.

Using masonry offers several specific advantages for a building. Because it is a non-combustible product, it provides excellent protection against fire. 
Despite these strengths, masonry has certain structural limitations. Most masonry walls rely heavily on their own weight to stay upright. Because each unit is only loosely connected by a thin layer of mortar, they can struggle during earthquakes. When the ground shakes horizontally, the lack of strong connections can lead to collapses. This is especially true for heavier masonry buildings. Furthermore, extreme weather can cause damage through freeze-thaw cycles, where expansion and contraction crack the material.
