Sakurai has spent decades shaping how people experience digital entertainment. His work spans many different styles of play. He has created platformers, puzzle games, and fighting games. His influence is felt deeply across the entire gaming industry.

Creating a video game is a massive collaborative effort. Sakurai often works as the primary leader for these projects. His wife, Michiko Sakurai, has contributed to many of his titles. She specializes in the graphical user interface, or GUI. The GUI is the visual system that allows players to interact with the game. They worked together on titles like Kirby Air Ride and Meteos. This partnership helps ensure the games are intuitive for players to use.

Sakurai's career began at the company HAL Laboratory. He joined the industry very early in his life. At age 19, he created the iconic character Kirby. He also directed the first title, Kirby's Dream Land, in 1992. He left HAL Laboratory on August 5, 2003. He felt the industry was changing in ways that made new projects difficult. He noted that people often assumed every new game must be a sequel. He wanted the freedom to pursue different creative ideas.

In 2005, Sakurai and Michiko founded their own company, Sora Ltd.

They work on a freelance basis to create various projects. Shortly after, he collaborated with Q Entertainment and Tetsuya Mizuguchi on the puzzle game Meteos. He also helped form Project Sora with Nintendo. This was a first-party studio owned 72% by Nintendo and 28% by Sora Ltd. Through this studio, he directed Kid Icarus: Uprising for the Nintendo 3DS. That project ended when Project Sora closed on June 30, 2012.

Major milestones define his long history in game development. In 2008, he directed Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii. This project was massive and used personnel from 19 different developer studios. To build excitement, he ran the Smash Bros. Dojo website. This site provided daily updates from May 22, 2007, to April 14, 2008. During this time, he also revealed his voice acting work. He provides the voice for the character King Dedede in several games. This includes Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and the Super Smash Bros. series.

In recent years, Sakurai has shifted toward teaching others. In August 2022, he launched a YouTube channel called Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games. He created this channel to teach basic game design principles. He wanted to reach more people than traditional technical conferences could. He wrote and pre-recorded all the videos himself. He worked with Hike Inc. for editing and 8-4 for English localization. The musical jingles for the channel were composed by Yuzo Koshiro. The production cost for this project was estimated at 90,000,000 yen.

His educational work has received significant professional recognition. The English version of his channel gained over 200,000 subscribers in one day. In 2023, the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association gave him awards for his channel. They praised his ability to share knowledge in an easy way. In March 2025, he received the AMD Award for Lifetime Achievement. He was also awarded the Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists. These honors recognize his lasting impact on both art and education.
