Marvin Eugene Wolfgang was a famous American sociologist and criminologist. A sociologist is a person who studies how people live in groups. A criminologist studies crime and why it happens. Wolfgang was a soldier during World War II. He fought in the Battle of Monte Cassino. After the war, he went to Dickinson College and graduated in 1948. He then studied at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his MA in 1950 and his PhD in 1955.

Wolfgang spent his life learning how crime affects society. He published a book in 1964 called The Measurement of Delinquency. This was the first study of the true impact of crime. In 1967, he wrote about violence in a specific group of people. He wrote over 30 books and 150 articles in his career. He was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania for many years. His work helped people understand how crime works in large groups.

One of his most important studies came out in 1972. It was called Delinquency in a Birth Cohort. He studied 10,000 boys born in Philadelphia in 1945. He wanted to see how many had contact with the police. Out of 9,945 boys, 3,475 had at least one police incident. He found that crime rates went up between ages 11 and 16. He also saw that crime rates went down at age 17.

Wolfgang had many different ideas about weapons and crime. In 1958, he shared his weapon substitution hypothesis. He thought that if someone could not use a gun, they would use another weapon. He based this on looking at homicide rates in Pennsylvania. Later, he found new data that did not fit this idea. He even disowned his old theory because of this new data. Other researchers had different views on how weapons change crime rates.

Marvin Wolfgang was a very respected leader in his field. He won the Hans Von Hentig Award in 1988. He also won the Edwin Sutherland Award in 1989. In 1997, he received the Beccaria Gold Medal. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society. He also spoke out against the death penalty and for gun control. He died in 1998 while studying crime in China.
