This government had the outside support of the Party for Freedom (PVV). At age 43, Rutte was the second-youngest prime minister in Dutch history. However, his first cabinet did not last long. It lasted only 558 days. A disagreement over a 16 billion euro budget caused the government to collapse in 2012. 
After the 2012 election, Rutte returned to power for a second term. This cabinet included the VVD and the Labour Party (PvdA). This was the first Dutch cabinet to finish a full four-year term since 1998. He then led a third cabinet involving several different parties. This period included a difficult time regarding a childcare benefits scandal. The cabinet resigned because of this issue. Despite this, the VVD won the 2021 election. Rutte began his fourth term in 2022. His final Dutch government ended in 2023 due to disagreements over migration. He served as a caretaker leader until July 2024.
Politicians and journalists have used many names to describe Rutte. Some called him "Teflon Mark." They said this because political scandals did not seem to stick to him. Others described him as a pragmatic leader. This means he was willing to change his views to reach a deal. He was often seen as a manager rather than a visionary. This pragmatic approach helped him lead many different coalitions. He could work with many different political factions to keep the nation running. This ability to accommodate others was a key part of his long career.
Today, Rutte's influence is global. As the secretary general of NATO, he works with many world leaders.
