He played for 16 seasons in the major leagues. Most of his career was spent with the Oakland Athletics and the St. Louis Cardinals. McGwire was one of the most prolific home run hitters in the history of the sport. A home run occurs when a batter hits the ball so hard it leaves the playing field. He hit 583 home runs during his professional career. This total ranked 11th in MLB history at the time of his retirement.

McGwire was a right-handed batter and thrower. He was known for his immense power and his extreme patience at the plate. This patience allowed him to maintain a career on-base percentage (OBP) of .394. His OBP measures how often a player reaches base safely. He also led the major leagues in bases on balls twice. He led the league in slugging percentage four times. Slugging percentage is a statistic that measures a batter's power.

He also led the league in runs batted in (RBI) once. RBI is the number of runs that score because of a batter's hit.

His career began with many impressive early milestones. In 1987, McGwire was a rookie for the Oakland Athletics. He hit 49 home runs during that season. This set a major-league record for home runs hit by a rookie. It remained a record until Aaron Judge hit 52 in 2017. Because of this performance, he was the unanimous American League Rookie of the Year. He also became the first player to hit 30 or more home runs in each of his first four full seasons. In 1989, he helped the Athletics win a World Series championship.

McGwire's career had periods of great success and periods of struggle. In 1991, he described the year as the "worst year" of his life. His batting average dropped to .201 during that time. He also faced personal difficulties with his marriage. However, he rededicated himself to training and used visual therapy to improve. He saw a major resurgence in the 1990s. In 1996, he hit 52 home runs and led the league in slugging and on-base percentage. He also became the fourth player to hit a ball over the left-field roof at Detroit's Tiger Stadium.

One of the most famous moments in baseball history happened in 1998. McGwire was playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. He entered a famous race to break the single-season home run record. The record was 61 home runs, set by Roger Maris in 1961. McGwire was chasing the record alongside Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs. On September 8, 1998, McGwire hit his 62nd home run. This surpassed the previous record.

He finished the season with 70 home runs. This record stood until Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs in 2001.

Despite his greatness, McGwire faced significant challenges. Injuries often limited his time on the field. He played 140 games or more in only eight of his 16 seasons. These injuries eventually played a role in his retirement after the 2001 season. Additionally, McGwire was a central figure in a major baseball scandal. In 2010, he admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs during much of his career. These drugs are substances used to improve athletic performance but are not allowed in professional sports. This admission changed how many people viewed his many records.

McGwire's impact on the sport was very large. Many people believe his 1998 home run chase helped "save baseball." This is because the chase attracted many new and younger fans. It also brought back older fans who had been disappointed by the player strike in 1994 and 1995. While his career was marked by both record-breaking power and controversy, his influence on the popularity of the game was undeniable.
