Born Alfredo Arnold Cocozza in Philadelphia on January 31, 1921, he became a major Hollywood film star. He was famous during the late 1940s and the 1950s. Lanza possessed a unique vocal quality that many experts found remarkable. Composer Johnny Green noted that Lanza had a tenor voice with baritone colors in the lower registers. This combination of tones gave his singing a special depth and musicality.

Lanza's musical journey began with classical training and operatic study. His parents were from the Italian regions of Abruzzo and Molise. They introduced him to classical singing at a very young age. By age 16, his vocal talent was clearly visible. He began performing in local operatic productions for the YMCA Opera Company in Philadelphia. In 1942, the conductor Serge Koussevitzky gave him a scholarship to the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, Massachusetts. Koussevitzky famously remarked that Lanza had a voice heard once in a hundred years.

During his early career, Lanza performed several significant operatic roles. He adopted the stage name Mario Lanza to honor his mother, Maria Lanza. In August 1942, he sang the role of Fenton in Otto Nicolai's *The Merry Wives of Windsor* at Tanglewood. He also performed in a presentation of Puccini's *La bohème*.

Critics at the time praised his warmth and power. In 1948, he sang the role of Pinkerton in Puccini's *Madama Butterfly* in New Orleans. These early performances established him as a rising star in the world of opera.

His path shifted from the opera stage to Hollywood following a concert at the Hollywood Bowl in 1947. Louis B. Mayer, the head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), saw the performance and was impressed. Mayer signed Lanza to a seven-year film contract. Lanza made his MGM film debut in *That Midnight Kiss* in 1949. His second major film, *The Toast of New Orleans*, brought him massive fame. The featured song, "Be My Love," became his first million-selling hit.

Lanza achieved massive commercial success through his film soundtracks. In 1951, he starred in the biopic *The Great Caruso*. He played his idol, the famous tenor Enrico Caruso. This film was the 11th top-grossing movie of that year. The song "The Loveliest Night of the Year" from the film also became a million-seller. His final million-selling hit was the song "Because You're Mine." This song earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

Despite his success, Lanza faced significant personal and professional challenges. He was described as rebellious, tough, and ambitious. He struggled with addictions to alcohol and overeating, which affected his health and professional relationships. He also experienced artistic disagreements with directors and studio heads. These conflicts eventually led to him being fired by MGM after a battle with studio head Dore Schary.

Even with these difficulties, he remained a highly influential performer.

At the time of his death in 1959, Lanza was still considered the most famous tenor in the world. He died of an apparent pulmonary embolism at the age of 38. Before his death, he had been preparing to return to his true love: opera. He was working in Rome with an operatic coach to prepare for new roles. He had planned to perform the role of Canio in Leonceram's *Pagliacci* for the 1960–61 season.

His career was a brief but incredibly bright period in musical history.
