He serves as the star of the Mario franchise and the official mascot for the Japanese company Nintendo. Mario is characterized as an Italian plumber who resides in the fictional Mushroom Kingdom. He is frequently accompanied by his younger twin brother, Luigi, and various friends like Princess Daisy, Toad, and Yoshi. His adventures often involve rescuing Princess Peach from the villainous Bowser. To succeed, Mario utilizes power-ups that grant him unique abilities. This character has become so famous that he is widely considered the most recognizable video game figure in history.

The design of Mario was a clever response to the technical limitations of early arcade hardware.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, used specific visual traits to overcome graphical constraints. For instance, he gave Mario a large nose and a thick mustache. This allowed the designers to avoid drawing a mouth or complex facial expressions. A red cap was also added to the character's design. This prevented the need to animate hair, a forehead, or eyebrows during jumps. To ensure players could clearly see his movements, Miyamoto dressed him in red overalls and a blue shirt. This high contrast helped his arm movements stand out against the game backgrounds.

Mario's history began during the development of the 1981 game Donkey Kong.

Miyamoto originally intended to use characters from the 1930s comic Popeye. However, Nintendo could not secure a license for those characters at the time. Consequently, Miyamoto created an unnamed protagonist to lead the game. Before settling on his famous name, the character was known by several titles. The development team called him "Ossan," while English instructions referred to him as "Jumpman." Miyamoto also considered the name "Mr. Video." He viewed the character as a versatile figure for cameos, much like director Alfred Hitchcock did in his films.

The origin of the name "Mario" is linked to a real-world person.

According to a widely shared story, Nintendo of America's landlord, Mario Segale, once confronted the company regarding unpaid rent. Following this encounter, employees chose to name the character after him. Another account from a former manager suggests the name was actually an inside joke. Regardless of the exact cause, the name stuck and became legendary. While Nintendo executives once debated if Mario had a last name, Miyamoto eventually affirmed that his full name is Mario Mario. This name has appeared in various strategy guides and film adaptations.

Mario's profession has shifted alongside the evolution of his games. In his debut in Donkey Kong, he was a carpenter working on a construction site. This choice helped players identify with him as an ordinary, hard-working person. When he appeared in the Mario Bros. series, his job changed to a plumber. This change made sense because much of that game takes place in underground settings and sewers. Over time, his appearance grew more detailed. Designers added blue eyes, white gloves, brown shoes, and gold buttons to his overalls. Even the "M" on his hat underwent changes to distinguish it from other famous logos.

The auditory identity of Mario is just as important as his visual look.

Charles Martinet provided the voice for Mario from 1991 until 2023. Martinet's audition was unique because he initially spoke in a soft, friendly voice after a moment of confusion. This voice became the standard for the character for over three decades. Martinet's dedication was immense, as he recorded approximately 5 million audio files. He even earned a Guinness World Record for performing the most roles with a single character. In October 2023, Kevin Afghani took over the role for the game Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

The impact of the Mario franchise is measurable by its massive commercial success. It is the best-selling video game franchise of all time. Mario has appeared in hundreds of titles across many different genres. He stars in platformers, puzzle games like Dr. Mario, and role-playing games like Paper Mario. He also competes in sports games such as Mario Kart and Mario Tennis. Beyond gaming, the character has moved into live-action and animated films. His influence is so vast that he inspired other famous characters, such as Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog. Mario remains a fundamental part of modern entertainment and digital culture.
