Her father taught her math and physics at home. This early training helped her love science. Even though women could not attend regular universities in Poland, she studied at a secret school called the Flying University.

In 1891, Marie moved to Paris to study at the University of Paris. She lived a very simple life to pay for her schooling.

Curie's journey began in Warsaw, Poland, in 1867. At that time, Poland was part of the Russian Empire. Her family faced financial struggles because of their involvement in Polish national uprisings. Her father, Władysław, was a teacher of mathematics and physics. He even brought laboratory equipment into their home to teach his children. Because women were not allowed in regular universities in Poland, Marie attended the clandestine Flying University. This was a secret, patriotic institution that provided higher learning for women.

In 1891, Marie moved to Paris to pursue her studies at the University of Paris. She lived very modestly to afford her education. She studied physics, chemistry, and mathematics, earning two degrees during her time there. In 1895, she married Pierre Curie, a fellow scientist and instructor at ESPCI Paris.

Curie's research focused on the mysterious rays discovered by Henri Becquerel in 1896. These rays were emitted by uranium salts. To study them, Marie used an electrometer, which is a sensitive device used to measure electric charge. Pierre and his brother had developed a version of this tool. Marie discovered that uranium rays caused the air around a sample to conduct electricity. She realized that the strength of this radiation depended only on the amount of uranium present. This led her to investigate whether other substances also emitted such rays.

Tragically, Marie's long exposure to radiation took a toll on her health. She died in 1934 at the age of 66 from aplastic anaemia. This condition was likely caused by her work with radioactive materials in the lab and at field hospitals.

Despite her death, her legacy remains massive. In 1995, she became the first woman to be entombed in the Paris Panthéon based on her own merits. The synthetic element curium was also named in her honor to recognize her contributions to science.
