At that time, astronomers used the Rudolphine Tables made by Johannes Kepler. However, those tables were very hard to use because they required logarithms. A logarithm is a complex mathematical tool used for difficult calculations. Maria created a simpler way to find where planets are in their orbits. Her new method helped people find the position of a planet more easily. This made the math much faster and reduced human errors.

Maria did not attend a formal school like students do today. Instead, her parents provided her education at home. Her father, Heinrich Cunitz, was a well-known physician. Her mother, Maria Scholtz, was also very well educated.

During this time, she and her husband Elias von Löwen had to find safety in a convent. While they were there, she worked on her astronomical tables. Elias was a physician who also studied astronomy and supported her work. He even wrote the preface for her book to show it was hers. Sadly, a fire in the town of Byczyna destroyed her home and many of her papers. This meant much of her research was lost forever.

We still honor Maria Cunitz in the world of space today. In 1991, the International Astronomical Union named a crater on Venus after her.

There is also a minor planet named 12624 Mariacunitia in her honor. In the town of Świdnica, there is a special monument made for her. It is an iron bench with a bronze statue of Maria. She is shown sitting on the bench while holding her book. These things remind us of her great gift to science.

This law helps determine a planet's position on its elliptical, or oval-shaped, path. By creating simpler algorithms, she reduced the chance of human and mathematical error.

Her book was a large quarto containing many pages of detailed tables. These tables allowed users to find the longitude and latitude of planets. She also provided data for other important astronomical parameters. Cunitz published her work in both Latin and German. This choice was intended to make her findings more accessible to more people. While her work did not have a massive impact on 17th-century astronomy, it was significant. She published in an isolated printing establishment in Olesnica, so only a few copies were made. One Parisian astronomer, Ismael Boulliau, did comment on her work, though he believed his own methods were better.

Maria's education was unique because she never attended a formal school. Instead, she learned at home from her highly educated parents. Her father, Heinrich Cunitz, was a well-known physician and landowner. Her mother, Maria Scholtz, was the self-educated daughter of a mathematician named Anton von Scholtz. Together, they taught her mathematics, medicine, history, and the fine arts. This deep training allowed her to become proficient in seven different languages. She could speak German, Italian, French, Polish, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew.

Her personal life was also connected to her scientific interests. In 1623, she married David von Gerstmann, but he passed away in 1626. In 1630, she married Elias von Löwen, a physician who also studied astronomy. Elias acted as her tutor and encouraged her passion for the stars. Together, they made observations of the planet Venus in 1627 and Jupiter in 1628. During the Thirty Years' War, which lasted from 1618 to 1648, the couple sought refuge in a convent in Poland. It was during this period of displacement that Maria worked on her astronomical tables.

Despite her brilliance, Maria faced many challenges as a woman in science. Because of the social limitations of the 1600s, she often had to communicate with other scholars using her husband's name. Her letters were often written with poetic language to follow the etiquette of the time. She was highly respected, with some calling her the "Silesian Pallas." Tragically, much of her physical research was lost to history. A fire broke out in the streets of Byczyna, Poland, and destroyed her home. The fire consumed her academic books, her correspondence, and her valuable astronomy equipment.

Today, we still find ways to honor her immense contributions. There are only nine physical copies of Urania propitia left in the world. These rare books are held in important places like the Library of the Astronomical Observatory of Paris. In 1991, the International Astronomical Union named a crater on Venus the Cunitz crater. There is also a minor planet, 12624 Mariacunitia, named in her honor. In her home region of Świdnica, a monument stands to her memory. It features a bronze sculpture of Maria sitting on an iron bench, holding her famous book.
