He even saved his brother, Otacilius, during a fight in Italy. 
Marcellus became a hero during a war against the Gauls. In 222 BC, he fought at the Battle of Clastidium. He met the Gallic king, Viridomarus, in a single combat. This means they fought one-on-one. Marcellus won the fight with his spear and his horse. He took the king's armor as a prize. Romans called this prize the spolia opima. It was the most prestigious award a general could earn. He gave the armor to the god Jupiter Feretrius. 
Later, Marcellus fought in the Second Punic War. This war involved the famous leader Hannibal from Carthage. In 216 BC, Marcellus was elected as a praetor. A praetor was a high-ranking official or army commander. He helped protect the city of Nola from Hannibal's attacks. This victory was important for the spirit of the Roman people.
