He was born on September 20, 1952, in a place called Juticalpa. Before he entered politics, he worked in his family's business. His family dealt in timber and cattle. This business was handed down to him by his father. He also studied civil engineering at a university for a short time. He eventually moved into the world of government leadership. He joined the Liberal Party of Honduras in 1970. This was the start of a very long career.

Zelaya's path to the presidency involved many steps. He served as a deputy in the National Congress three times. This happened between 1985 and 1998. He also worked as a minister for the government. In 2005, he ran for president with his own group. His group was called Movimiento Esperanza Liberal. He won a large number of votes during the primary. On November 27, 2005, he won the general election. He received 918,669 votes to win the office.

As president, Zelaya made many big changes for the people. He helped more than 1.6 million children by providing school meals. He also worked to give free electricity to families in need. His government raised the minimum wage by 80 percent. He provided help to 200,000 families living in extreme poverty. Zelaya also changed his political views during this time. He moved from conservative ideas toward the political left. He joined a group called ALBA to help Latin American countries work together. This group focused on social and economic cooperation.

However, his time in office led to a serious crisis. Many people in Honduras disagreed with his new plans. Some leaders worried he wanted to change the country's constitution. They were concerned he might try to stay in power longer. This disagreement led to a coup d'état in 2009. The military seized him on June 28, 2009. They sent him away to the country of Costa Rica.

He later returned to Honduras in a very quiet way. He stayed at the Brazilian embassy in the city of Tegucigalpa.

Today, Zelaya is still involved in the life of his country. He serves as a deputy for the Central American Parliament. His personal life has also made history in Honduras. He has been married to Xiomara Castro since 1976. His wife was elected as the president in 2021. Because of her win, Zelaya became a very special leader. He is the first "First Gentleman" in the history of Honduras. This role began when she took office in 2022. His story shows how much politics can change a nation.
