He is often considered Spain's greatest composer of the 20th century. While he did not write a massive number of musical pieces, his work was deeply impactful. He worked alongside other famous musicians like Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados. Falla's music helped define the sound of Spanish classical music for the world. He combined traditional folk elements with sophisticated orchestral techniques.

Falla's musical development followed a clear path of study and performance. He began with private piano lessons and studied harmony and counterpoint. These are the rules of how musical notes work together. Later, he attended the Real Conservatorio de Música y Declamación in Madrid. There, he studied composition under Felip Pedrell. This teacher helped Falla discover an interest in the music of Andalusia. This region's traditional styles became a core part of his creative process.

His compositions can be divided into several important types and stages. Early in his career, he wrote zarzuelas, which are Spanish musical plays. He also wrote chamber music for small groups of instruments. As he matured, he moved toward large-scale works like operas and ballets. One of his most famous works is the ballet *El sombrero de tres picos*, or *The Three-Cornered Hat*.

This production was unique because the artist Pablo Picasso designed the sets and costumes. He also wrote concertos, which are pieces designed to showcase a specific instrument.

Falla's life was shaped by the cities where he lived and worked. He was born in Cádiz in 1876.

He moved to Madrid to study and eventually moved to Paris in 1907. In Paris, he spent seven years meeting legendary composers like Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. In 1908, King Alfonso XIII gave him a royal grant. This money helped him stay in Paris to finish his *Cuatro piezas españolas*. Later, he lived in Granada from 1921 to 1939, where he organized music competitions.

During his time in Granada, Falla explored new musical textures. He wrote the puppet opera *El retablo de maese Pedro* in 1923. This work was special because it was the first time he included a harpsichord in his orchestra. The harpsichord is an older keyboard instrument. He also wrote the *Harpsichord Concerto* for the musician Wanda Landowska. In this period, his style moved toward neoclassicism. This is a style that looks back to older musical forms while keeping modern ideas.

Political changes forced Falla to leave his home country. Following the victory of Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil War, Falla moved to Argentina in 1939.

He continued working on his large orchestral cantata, *Atlántida*, while living in exile. He refused a large pension from the Spanish government to return home. Falla died of cardiac arrest in Alta Gracia, Argentina, in 1946. He was just nine days shy of his 70th birthday. His family eventually brought his remains back to Spain in 1947 to be buried in Cádiz.

Falla's legacy remains strong through many cultural honors. His home in Granada is now a biographical museum.

In Madrid, a station on Metro Line 10 bears his name. His music continues to connect Spanish folk traditions with the global classical stage.
