Many people did this work. Almost 130,000 people helped. They built large plants. These plants made special fuel. 
Scientists led the work. One man was named J. Robert Oppenheimer. He helped design the tools. He worked in a place called Los Alamos.

This operation involved personnel traveling through Europe to collect nuclear materials and documents.
Even after World War II, the legacy of the Manhattan Project continued. The project conducted further weapons testing at Bikini Atoll during Operation Crossroads. It also helped establish the modern network of national laboratories. The research supported new medical advancements in the field of radiology. Additionally, the project's work laid the groundwork for the development of the nuclear navy. Control over American atomic research remained with the military until January 1947. At that time, the United States Atomic Energy Commission was formed to take over these responsibilities.
