It sits on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River. The city is located in the central Dry Zone. It is 631 km north of Yangon. Mandalay is the main economic, educational, and health center for Upper Myanmar. It is also considered the center of Burmese culture. The city's name likely comes from the nearby Mandalay Hill.

Some believe the name comes from a Pali word. This word might refer to circular plains or a mountain from Hindu mythology. When it was first founded, the city had official names like Yadanarbon. This name means "City of Gems" in Pali.

King Mindon founded the royal capital in 1857.

He wanted to fulfill a prophecy about a Buddhist metropolis. The king chose a site surrounded by four rivers. The city plan used a 144-square block grid pattern. At the center sat a 16-square block royal palace compound.

The citadel covered 1,020 acres. It was protected by four long walls and a wide, deep moat. Watchmen used turrets with gold-tipped spires along the walls. The king also built many religious sites. These included the Kuthodaw Pagoda and the Thudamma zayats. These zayats were public houses for preaching Buddhism.

The construction of the palace was a massive task. In June 1857, workers dismantled the old palace in Amarapura. They moved the structures to the new site using elephants. The palace compound was officially completed in May 1859. Mandalay served as the last royal capital of the Konbaung dynasty. This lasted for 26 years until the British Empire annexed the kingdom. In 1885, the British conquered the city. They sent King Thibaw Min and Queen Supayalat into exile in India. During this time, soldiers accidentally burned the Royal Library. This fire destroyed many important royal records and genealogies.

British rule changed the city's role significantly.

While Mandalay remained a cultural center, political power moved to Yangon. The British focused on commercial development. They brought rail transport to Mandalay in 1889. However, the first college did not arrive until 1925. The British also used the palace compound as Fort Dufferin to house troops. During the colonial era, Mandalay became a site for national protests. Many Indian immigrants also moved to the city during this period. In 1904, a plague caused one-third of the population to flee.

World War II brought great destruction to the city.

In April 1942, the Japanese Air Service carried out heavy air raids. The city had weak firefighting resources and no anti-aircraft capacity. These attacks destroyed three-fifths of the houses. About 2,000 civilians were killed during these raids. Later, Allied bombing burnt the palace citadel to the ground. Only the royal mint and the watch tower survived. A faithful replica of the palace was eventually rebuilt in the 1990s.

Since gaining independence in 1948, Mandalay has grown rapidly. In 1980, the population was about 500,000. By 2008, the population reached one million.

This growth was driven partly by immigrants from China. Many people from Yunnan moved to the city for business. By the 1990s, it is estimated that 300,000 Yunnanese migrants arrived. Today, ethnic Chinese make up 40% to 50% of the population. This influx has reshaped the city's ethnic makeup and commerce. Chinese festivals are now a regular part of the local culture.

The city faces challenges from fires and natural disasters. In 1981, a fire destroyed 6,000 buildings. This left 90,000 people homeless. Another fire in 1984 caused $96 million in property damage. Mandalay also sits on the Sagaing Fault.
