Malvaceae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Malvaceae family is a massive and diverse group of flowering plants. Most people simply call these plants mallows. This family is estimated to contain 244 different genera. It also includes approximately 4,225 known species.

These plants play a vital role in human life and global ecosystems. Some species provide food, while others provide materials for clothing. Because they are so diverse, they appear in many different environments across the world.

Scientists use specific physical traits to identify members of the Malvaceae family. These traits are called synapomorphies, which are shared characteristics that define a group. One important feature is the presence of tile cells. These are vertically positioned cells found between ray cells in the plant's wood. Many mallows also possess trichomatous nectaries. These are nectaries made of densely arranged, multicellular hairs that look like trichomes.

Most of these nectaries sit on the inner surface of the sepals. However, in the subfamily Tiliodeae, they are found on the petals instead.

Another fascinating mechanism is the bicolor unit. This is a specific type of inflorescence, or flower arrangement structure. It is named after its discovery in the species *Theobroma bicolor*. The bicolor unit features an ordered structure with determinate cymose parts. In this system, the inflorescence branches off a main axis. This creates different orders of flowers, with the main axis developing first.

Bracts, which are leaf-like structures, support these stalks. A key characteristic of this unit is the presence of both fertile and sterile bracts.

Physically, these plants vary greatly in their growth forms. Most species are herbaceous plants, which are soft-stemmed plants. Others are shrubs or even large trees. Some can even be lianas, which are long, woody vines that climb.

Their leaves are usually arranged alternately on the stem. Many leaves are palmately lobed, meaning they are shaped like a hand. If the leaf margins have teeth, they often show malvoid teeth. This means a vein ends at the tip of every tooth. The stems often contain mucilage canals, which hold a slippery, mucous-like substance.

Taxonomy, the science of naming and classifying plants, has changed for the Malvaceae. Historically, scientists used a narrow definition called Malvaceae *sensu stricto*. This group was very uniform and easy to define. However, modern genetic studies led to a wider definition called Malvaceae *sensu lato*. This broader group includes the families Bombacaceae, Tiliaceae, and Sterculiaceae. Researchers found that these former families were not monophyletic groups on their own. By combining them, they formed one large, monophyletic group.

A major study in 2021 used genomic data to create a complete framework for all nine subfamilies.

There are several massive genera within this family. The genus *Hibiscus* is the largest, containing 434 species. Other significant genera include *Pavonia* with 291 species and *Sida* with 275 species. *Ayenia* contains 216 species, while *Dombeya* has 197 species. The genus *Sterculia* is also large, with 181 species.

These numbers show just how much variety exists within a single plant family.

Many Malvaceae species are of great economic importance. For example, four species of *Gossypium* provide us with cotton. The plant *Theobroma cacao* is the source of cacao, used to make chocolate. Other important crops include okra, kola nut, and kenaf. Some members provide food in other ways, such as the edible fruit of the durian tree.

Even the name "mallow" has deep roots. It comes from the Latin word *malva*, which is also the origin of the color mauve. This shows how closely these plants are linked to our language and our daily lives.
