Magnesium chloride

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Magnesium chloride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula MgCl2. It is a vital substance used in many different industries and natural processes. This compound often exists as a colorless or white solid. It is highly soluble, meaning it dissolves very easily in water. A unique property of magnesium chloride is its deliquescence. This is a process where the solid attracts moisture from the air. Eventually, the salt absorbs so much water that it turns into a liquid.

Magnesium chloride exists in many different forms called hydrates. A hydrate is a compound that contains water molecules within its structure. The number of water molecules, represented by the letter n, can range from 1 to 12. These hydrates lose water at different temperatures when they are heated. For example, the dodecahydrate loses water at −16.4 °C. The hexahydrate loses water at 116.7 °C. The dihydrate loses its water at about 300 °C. In its hexahydrate form, the magnesium ion is coordinated to six water ligands. This means the water molecules are chemically bonded to the magnesium center in an octahedral shape.

There are several ways to produce and extract magnesium chloride. It can be taken from brine or seawater through evaporation. In North America and South America, it is often obtained from the Great Salt Lake. In the Jordan Valley, it is sourced from the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is notable because it contains a very high magnesium chloride ratio of 50.8%. Another method involves extracting a mineral called bischofite from ancient seabeds. An example of such a seabed is the Zechstein seabed in northwest Europe. Scientists can also regenerate the compound using a chemical reaction. They can react magnesium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid to create it.

One of the most important industrial uses is as a precursor to magnesium metal. A precursor is a starting material used to make a final product. To create the metal, engineers use a process called electrolysis. This involves passing an electric current through molten salt. This must be done in molten salt rather than an aqueous solution. If water were present, the magnesium would react with the water immediately. Instead, the electrolysis produces metallic magnesium at the cathode. At the same time, chloride anions are oxidized at the anode to release chlorine gas.

Magnesium chloride is also widely used for road safety and environmental control. It is a common agent for dust control and soil stabilization. It helps prevent wind erosion on bare soil. In winter, it is essential for ice control on highways and sidewalks. Road workers use it in three specific ways: anti-icing, prewetting, and pretreating. Anti-icing prevents snow from sticking to the pavement. Prewetting involves spraying a liquid formulation onto salt before it is spread. Pretreating means mixing the magnesium chloride and salt together before they are loaded onto trucks.

It is often preferred over calcium chloride because it damages concrete much more slowly.

In the world of food and medicine, this compound plays a fascinating role. It is used as a coagulant to make tofu from soy milk. In Japan, this substance is known as nigari, which comes from seawater. In China, it is called lushui. These natural forms are not completely refined and contain other minerals. Magnesium chloride is also used in pharmaceutical preparations and as an electrolyte. In gardening, it serves as a source of magnesium for plants. This is often done through foliar feeding, which means applying the nutrient directly to the leaves. However, users must be careful because too much chloride can become toxic to the plant.

Finally, magnesium chloride is important for managing waste and supporting ecosystems. It is used in wastewater treatment to help remove phosphorus. This is done by helping phosphorus precipitate into a form called struvite. In the ocean, magnesium levels are typically between 1250 and 1350 mg/L. This represents about 3.7% of the total mineral content in seawater. Magnesium is a key part of the environment for many sea creatures. It is essential for the growth of corals, clams, and various invertebrates. Understanding how this salt moves through water and soil helps scientists protect these delicate natural systems.
