Long ago, men sailed far away.

Long ago, a leader named Magellan planned a trip.

The trip was very hard. The men faced big storms. They also had very little food. One man named Elcano led the ships later. He helped the last ship get home.
They were the first to sail around the whole world. This showed how big the ocean is. It was a very great trip.
In 1519, a leader named Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain.

The voyage was very difficult. The crew faced big storms and hunger. They also dealt with sickness called scurvy. Some men even fought against their leaders. Magellan died in a battle in the Philippines in 1521.
After Magellan died, a man named Juan Sebastián Elcano took command. He led the last ship, the Victoria, back to Spain.
The Magellan expedition was a famous journey in the 1500s. It was a plan to find a new sea path to the Spice Islands. These islands are in a place we now call Indonesia. Finding a way to these islands was very important for trade. At that time, Portugal controlled the eastern routes around Africa. Spain needed its own way to reach Asia by sailing west.
The fleet started with five ships and about 270 men. They left Spain on 20 September 1519. The ships carried food like wine, hardtack, flour, and salted meat. They even had seven cows and three pigs on board. The ships sailed across the Atlantic Ocean first. Then they moved south along the coast of South America. On 1 November 1520, they entered the Strait of Magellan. This path led them into a huge ocean. Magellan named this ocean the Mar Pacifico.
Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer. He wanted to find a western route to the spices. He asked the King of Portugal for help many times. The King said no to his requests. So, Magellan moved to Spain to find a new leader. He met King Charles I of Spain in 1518. The King agreed to pay for the big trip. Magellan and his partner Rui Faleiro were named leaders.
The journey was very hard for the sailors. They faced big storms and many hungry days. Some men got sick with a disease called scurvy. There were also fights among the crew members. Magellan died in a battle in the Philippines in April 1521.

Only one ship, the Victoria, finished the whole trip. It returned to Spain on 6 September 1522. Only about 40 men were left from the original crew. This voyage was the first time anyone sailed around the Earth. It traveled about 60,440 kilometers in total. The trip showed how huge the Pacific Ocean really is. It proved that ships could sail around the world. This changed how people understood our planet.
The Magellan-Elcano expedition was a massive maritime journey in the 16th century. Its primary goal was to find a western sea route to the Moluccas. These islands are located in present-day Indonesia and were known as the Spice Islands. At the time, the spice trade was incredibly valuable for global commerce. Because the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas gave Portugal control over eastern routes, Spain needed a new way to reach Asia. This expedition sought to prove that a western path existed.
The expedition was organized and led by Ferdinand Magellan. He was a Portuguese explorer with experience in India and Morocco. Magellan had received letters from a friend, Francisco Serrão, who lived in the Moluccas. These letters described the richness of the islands. Magellan used this information to petition King Manuel I of Portugal for funding. When the King repeatedly denied his requests, Magellan moved to Seville, Spain, in 1517. He eventually convinced King Charles I of Spain to sponsor the voyage.
To prepare for the voyage, the Spanish Crown and private investors provided significant funding. The total cost was recorded at 8,751,125 maravedis. This included the cost of the ships, supplies, and crew salaries. A large portion of the budget, 1,252,909 maravedis, went toward food. The fleet, called the Armada de Molucca, consisted of five ships. The flagship was named the Trinidad. Other ships included the San Antonio, the Concepción, the Santiago, and the Victoria.
The fleet departed Spain on 20 September 1519 with approximately 270 men. The crew was a diverse group of many nationalities. It included Spaniards, Portuguese, Italians, French, Germans, and even sailors from Asia. Provisions were essential for the long journey. Most of the food consisted of wine and hardtack. The ships also carried flour, salted meat, cheese, and even livestock like seven cows and three pigs. They sailed across the Atlantic and moved south along the coast of South America.
On 1 November 1520, the fleet entered a narrow passage now called the Strait of Magellan. This passage allowed them to reach a new, vast ocean. Magellan named this body of water Mar Pacifico, or the Pacific Ocean. The crossing of the Pacific took 98 days. During the voyage, the crew faced extreme hardships. They dealt with storms, starvation, and a disease called scurvy. There were also internal conflicts, including mutinies by the mostly Spanish crew.
In April 1521, the expedition reached the Philippines. It was during this time that Ferdinand Magellan died in a battle with indigenous people.

The voyage concluded on 6 September 1522 when the Victoria returned to Spain. This was the first successful circumnavigation of the Earth in history. The journey covered a total distance of 60,440 kilometers. Only about 40 men and one ship survived the entire trip. Although the route was too long to be commercially useful for Spain, the mission was a massive success for science. It proved the world could be sailed around and revealed the true scale of the Pacific Ocean. This changed the European understanding of global geography forever.
