The city is built around famous temples. The Meenakshi Temple and Koodal Azhagar temple are very important. 
Today, Madurai is a busy place for work and school. It has many big factories. These make things like rubber and granite. It also has many colleges for medicine and law. In 2011, more than 1.4 million people lived there.

In 1921, he chose to wear a simple loin cloth after seeing workers in Madurai. 
Today, Madurai is a busy hub for learning and work. It is a place where many things are made. You can find factories for rubber, chemicals, and granite here. It is also a great place for students to study. The city has many important schools, like the Madurai Medical College.

Archaeologists have found evidence of very ancient life here. Excavations in Manalur show Roman trade links from 300 BCE. The city is also linked to the Sangam age. This was a time of great Tamil literature and scholarship. The third Tamil Sangam was a major meeting of scholars held here. 
Madurai is a massive urban center in modern India. As of the 2011 census, it was the third largest metropolis in Tamil Nadu. This ranking follows Chennai and Coimbatore. The city had a population of 1,470,755 in 2011. It is also the 27th largest urban agglomeration in the whole country. The city covers a large area and manages 100 different wards. 
The city is a vital hub for education and industry. Many people go there to study at large institutions. Examples include Madurai Medical College and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. 


Madurai has also played a role in important social movements. In 1921, Mahatma Gandhi adopted the loin cloth as his dress. He did this after seeing agricultural laborers in Madurai. In 1939, the Temple Entry Authorization and Indemnity Act was passed. This law removed rules that stopped certain groups from entering temples. This movement was led by activists like A. Vaidyanatha Iyer. The city also serves as a legal center. It is the seat of a bench of the Madras High Court.
