A man named Rowland Hussey Macy started it in 1858. His first store was in New York City. It was on Sixth Avenue. The store used a rooster as its logo. Later, it changed to a red star.

In 1902, the main store moved to Herald Square. This big store covers almost an entire city block. It is one of the largest in the world. Macy's grew by buying other local stores. This helped it spread across the country. It now has 450 locations. These are in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Macy's also has a sister brand called Bloomingdale's. The company has 94,000 workers. It makes a lot of money each year.
