It was written for a play called The Threepenny Opera. Kurt Weill wrote the music. Bertolt Brecht wrote the words. The song tells a story about a criminal named Macheath. He is also called Mack the Knife. The song was a last-minute addition to the play. An actor wanted a new song to introduce his character. Instead of the character singing it, a street singer sings it. This follows an old tradition of street singers.

Many great artists have made this song famous. Louis Armstrong recorded a version in 1955. It became a hit in the United States. Bobby Darin made a very popular version in 1959. His version had a bouncy beat. It reached number one on the music charts. He won two Grammy Awards for it. Ella Fitzgerald also won a Grammy for her version. Her performance in Berlin was very special. She even made up new words during her show. This song is now a classic part of music history.
