He was born in Cuba. Later, he moved to New York City. In 1940, he started a band called the Afro-Cubans. He worked with a musical director named Mario Bauzá. Together, they mixed Cuban rhythms with jazz music. This helped create new styles like Cubop and salsa.

Machito was the leader of the group. He played the maracas, which are small instruments filled with seeds. His foster sister, Graciela, was a singer in the band. They often sang duets together. The band used many instruments. They had loud horns like trumpets and saxophones. They also used drums like the bongo and the conga.

Machito's music inspired many great jazz players. He even played at famous places like Carnegie Hall. In 1983, he won a Grammy Award. This is a very big prize for music makers. People in New York City honor him today. They named a place Machito Square to remember his work. His son, Mario, later led the orchestra too.
