M-theory

Scientists want to understand how everything in our universe works.

Open and closed strings

One big problem is that gravity and tiny particles follow different rules. Gravity follows the rules of general relativity. Tiny particles follow the rules of quantum mechanics. String theory tries to fix this by saying particles are actually tiny strings. These strings can vibrate in different ways to create matter. M-theory is a very important idea that brings many theories together. It might eventually explain all the forces in nature.

How does M-theory work?

It suggests that the universe has eleven dimensions. We only see four dimensions, like height and width. The extra dimensions might be hidden through compactification. This means they curl up into tiny circles. You can imagine a garden hose from far away. It looks like a one-dimensional line. But if you get close, you see its round shape.

This shows how a second dimension can be hidden.

In 1995, a physicist named Edward Witten changed how we think.

Before this, scientists had five different versions of string theory. These versions seemed to be very different from each other. Witten shared his idea at a conference at the University of Southern California. He suggested these five theories were actually part of one big system. This discovery started a period called the second superstring revolution. His work used math to show how the theories were related.

There are many special facts about how these theories connect.

StringTheoryDualities
StringTheoryDualities

Scientists use math tools called dualities to link them. S-duality connects theories where particles interact strongly or weakly. T-duality looks at strings moving around circular dimensions. These dualities show that two different math descriptions can be the same thing. M-theory also includes objects called branes. A brane is a physical object with many dimensions. A zero-dimensional brane is a point, and a one-dimensional brane is a string.

M-theory is like a giant puzzle that is still being solved.

We do not have a complete way to write it down yet. Scientists use things like matrix theory to try and understand it. They also look at how branes move through space. Even the name M-theory is a bit of a mystery. Edward Witten said the M could stand for "magic" or "mystery." It could also stand for "membrane." We will know the true name when the theory is finished.
