Because it was so efficient to build, tens of thousands were produced. Many were distributed to the British Commonwealth and the Soviet Union through the Lend-Lease program. This program helped supply Allied nations with much-needed military equipment. The British named the tank after General William Tecumseh Sherman from the American Civil War.

The development of the M4 Sherman began as a way to improve upon the earlier M3 Lee tank.

The M3 had an unconventional and difficult layout. It featured a 37 mm gun turret on top and a main gun mounted in the side sponson. This hull-mounted gun had limited traverse, meaning it could not aim easily across the tank. Designers wanted a more versatile design with a more efficient gun mounting. The U.S. Army Ordnance Department submitted detailed design characteristics for the M4 on August 31, 1940. After reviewing five different designs, the U.S. Armored Force Board chose the simplest option on April 18, 1941. This chosen design, known as the T6, used a modified M3 hull and chassis. It featured a new turret that could hold a 75 mm gun.

Reliability was a core goal for the engineers who built the Sherman. They used features developed for U.S. light tanks during the 1930s to ensure the tank could work well in harsh conditions. These features included vertical volute spring suspension and rubber-bushed tracks.

The tank also used a rear-mounted radial engine with drive sprockets located in the front. Standardization was another critical part of the design process. By making parts interchangeable, the military could streamline production. This also allowed crews to find replacement components more efficiently in the field. The tank's moderate size and weight also helped with logistics. It was light enough to be transported by existing bridges and engineering equipment.

These included the M4, M4A1, M4A2, M4A3, M4A4, M4A5, and M4A6. These names did not always mean one was better than the other. Instead, they showed different ways the tanks were manufactured at different locations. For example, the M4A1 had a fully cast upper hull, giving it a rounded appearance. Other models, like the M4A4, had longer hulls to fit larger engines. The engines themselves varied greatly between models. Some used air-cooled Wright R-975 radial gasoline engines. Others used liquid-cooled Ford GAA V8 gasoline engines or even diesel engines. The M4A2 used a pair of liquid-cooled GMC Detroit Diesel engines. This variety allowed different factories to contribute to the massive production effort.

American industry produced a staggering number of these vehicles. The M4 Sherman was the most-produced American tank of the war, with 49,324 units built.

The only tank from that era to exceed this number was the Soviet T-34, which had about 84,070 units built. The Sherman first entered combat in North Africa with the British Army in late 1942. It fought at the Second Battle of El Alamein, where its 75 mm gun and armor provided an advantage over lighter German and Italian tanks. By 1944, however, the situation changed. German upgraded medium and heavy tanks began to have better firepower and armor. To stay effective, the Allies relied on numerical superiority and better mechanical reliability. They also used increased fire support from artillery and fighter-bombers. Later in the war, the 76 mm M1 gun was added to improve armor penetration.

The British also helped improve the tank's combat effectiveness. They refitted some Shermans with a powerful 76.2 mm Ordnance QF 17-pounder gun.

These specific tanks were called the Sherman Firefly. The Sherman was instrumental in many successful Allied offensives. It played a major role during the landings in North Africa, known as Operation Torch. It was also a key part of the campaigns in Italy and France. Despite having thinner armor than German heavy tanks like the Tiger or Panther, the Sherman's flexibility was unmatched. Its ability to be produced in massive quantities made it a backbone of the Allied armored forces.

The legacy of the M4 Sherman continued long after World War II ended.
