Margulis had a big idea about cells. She thought some cell parts were once tiny bacteria. These parts are called organelles. She believed they joined together to make new cells. This is called endosymbiosis. Many scientists did not believe her at first. In fact, fifteen journals rejected her main paper! But she did not give up. Later, scientists found genetic proof that she was right.

She also helped create the Gaia hypothesis. This idea says the Earth works like one big system. Life helps keep the planet healthy. Margulis also worked to group life into five kingdoms. She spent her life teaching and studying biology. She won the National Medal of Science in 1999. She was a very brave and strong thinker.
