She is most famous for being the first performer to win multiple Academy Awards. She was also the first person to win these awards in consecutive years. Her career serves as a significant study in the rapid rise and fall of stardom. Rainer's life moved from the intense stages of Europe to the massive film studios of America. She remains a legendary figure because of her unique emotional depth and her historic achievements in cinema.

Rainer's journey into acting began with intense physical and emotional energy. As a child in Vienna, she was a champion runner and a fearless mountain climber. She later explained that she chose acting to help manage this high energy. Her professional training started in Europe under the guidance of famous directors. She studied with the theater director Louise Dumont and later with Max Reinhardt. By age 18, she was already a distinguished stage actress in Berlin. This European foundation prepared her for the global stage of Hollywood.

Her transition to American film followed a specific sequence of discovery and training. In 1934, a talent scout named Phil Berg saw her perform in a play. He offered her a three-year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). Because her English was not yet strong, MGM assigned Constance Collier to train her. This training focused on correct speech and dramatic modulation. Her first American role was in the 1935 film Escapade. This role generated immense publicity and labeled her as a new sensation in Hollywood.

Rainer's career is defined by two distinct, award-winning types of performances. The first was her role as Anna Held in the musical biography The Great Ziegfeld. In this film, she displayed a wide-eyed charm and a sense of vulnerability. Her performance in a telephone scene was so emotional that it earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress. This earned her the nickname "the Viennese teardrop."

Her second major type of role was much more subdued and dramatic. In the 1937 film The Good Earth, she played a poor Chinese farm wife. This role was a complete contrast to her earlier, more vivacious characters.

The significance of Rainer's success is reflected in specific historical records. She was the first actress to win two Academy Awards in a row. She is also one of only three actresses to win two Oscars before the age of 30.

This group also includes actresses Jodie Foster and Hilary Swank. Beyond her acting, Rainer set a record for longevity in the industry. At the time of her death in 2014, she was the longest-lived Oscar recipient. She lived to be 104 years old, nearly reaching her 105th birthday.

Despite her massive success, Rainer experienced a rapid decline in her Hollywood career. She later remarked that winning two consecutive Oscars was actually a burden. She felt that audience expectations became too high to fulfill.

Several factors contributed to this decline. She received poor career advice from her husband, the playwright Clifford Odets. Additionally, the unexpected death of her admired producer, Irving Thalberg, in 1936 impacted her. Some historians even refer to her as a primary example of an "Oscar victim" in Hollywood mythology.

Rainer's life connects the worlds of European theater and American cinema. Her career shows how talent can bridge different cultures and languages. She moved from the rigid structures of German stage acting to the commercial system of MGM. Her story illustrates the complex relationship between artistic growth and the pressures of fame. Even after leaving Hollywood to return to Europe, her impact on film history remained.
