Lugol's iodine

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Lugol's iodine is a special liquid. It was first made in 1829. A French doctor named Jean Lugol made it. The liquid is a mix of iodine and potassium iodide in water.

This liquid has many uses. Doctors use it to help the thyroid gland. The thyroid is a part of your body. It can also help protect the thyroid from radiation. Doctors use it to find cancer. When they put it on certain cells, the cells turn brown. This happens because of a thing called glycogen. Cancer cells do not turn brown. This helps doctors see where the bad cells are.

Lugol's iodine is also a disinfectant. This means it kills germs. People can use it on small cuts. It can even clean drinking water in an emergency. In an aquarium, it helps corals. It can help them stay bright and healthy.

Scientists also use it in labs. It can show if starch is present. Starch is found in many plants. When the liquid touches starch, it turns dark blue or black. This is a way to test for starch.
