geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Lucayan Archipelago is a large group of islands. It sits in the North Atlantic Ocean. This group is part of the Caribbean region. It stretches from the southeast of Florida to northern Hispaniola. The islands include the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

There are about 740 islands and 2,400 cays. Cays are small, low islands. Most of these are very small. Only 38 islands have people living on them. The islands are made of coral and limestone. Most are low to the sea. The highest point is Mount Alvernia on Cat Island.

The weather is tropical. It is warm and wet. There are wet and dry seasons. Big storms called hurricanes can hit the islands. These storms can change how the land looks.

Many animals live here. You can find dolphins and humpback whales in the sea. Birds live on the islands too. Some animals live in caves near the coast. You might see bats, lizards, or snakes there. Long ago, the Lucayan people lived here. They used canoes to travel and trade.
