This was the highest appeal court in the Kingdom of Poland. In the 17th century, the area hosted Scottish and Armenian communities.

Before World War II, the region was a global center for Judaism. Many Jewish people moved here to develop trade and services. By the 20th century, Jews made up over 70% of the population in eleven towns. In some places like Łaszczów, they made up nearly 100% of the residents. This period produced famous figures like author Israel Joshua Singer. However, the region also faced extreme tragedy during the war. Nazi Germany established several concentration and extermination camps here. These included Majdanek, Bełżec, and Sobibór. Many Polish and Jewish people suffered through massacres and forced labor.
