People call him a "father of skyscrapers." He helped change how we build tall cities.

Before Sullivan, tall buildings needed very thick walls. These heavy walls could only hold so much weight. Then, builders started using steel frames. This new way used a strong steel skeleton. The walls and floors hung from this frame. This let buildings grow very tall and slender. It also allowed for much larger windows.

Sullivan had a special rule for his work. He said "form follows function." This means a building's shape should match its job. He did not just make plain boxes. He added beautiful patterns to his buildings. He used shapes like vines and ivy.

He often used terra cotta, which is a soft clay. This clay was easy to shape into art. He also used large, round arches for doors and windows. His work inspired many other famous architects.
