He was a politician and a dedicated leader for the Métis people. The Métis are a group with mixed First Nations and European ancestry. Riel fought to protect Métis identity as the Canadian government expanded westward. His actions helped shape the province of Manitoba and influenced how Canada was built. To many, he was a defender of rights. To others, he was a dangerous rebel.

Louis Riel was born on October 22, 1844, in St. Boniface.

He lived in the Red River Settlement, which was then part of Rupert's Land. This land was managed by the Hudson's Bay Company. Riel grew up in a large, devoutly Catholic family. His father, Louis Riel Sr., was a well-known figure in the community. The family's reputation helped Riel become a respected member of society. He was a talented scholar who studied science, philosophy, and many languages.

In 1869, the Red River Resistance began because of political uncertainty.

The Hudson's Bay Company was transferring Rupert's Land to Canada. However, the Canadian government did not consult the local Métis population. A survey party arrived in August 1869 to map the land. They used a grid system of townships. This system ignored the existing Métis river lots. Riel and the National Committee of the Métis organized to stop this survey. They wanted to ensure the Métis had a say in their own future.

The Métis established a provisional government to manage the territory.

Riel became the president of this government in December 1869. This government created its own newspaper called *New Nation*. It also formed the Legislative Assembly of Assiniboia to pass laws. This assembly had 28 elected representatives. The group negotiated with Canadian officials to secure rights for the Métis. These efforts eventually led to the creation of the province of Manitoba in 1870.

During this first resistance, a major conflict occurred with a man named Thomas Scott.

Scott was a Canadian nationalist who opposed the Métis government. After several disputes, Riel ordered Scott to be executed by a firing squad. This event happened on March 4, 1870. Many people in Canada were outraged by this action. It created deep divisions between French Canadians and English-speaking Protestants. Following this, Riel fled to the United States to avoid prosecution.

Years later, Riel returned to Canada to address new grievances.

In 1884, Métis leaders in Saskatchewan asked for his help. The Canadian government was not meeting their needs. This led to the North-West Rebellion of 1885. Riel led an armed conflict against government forces. The rebellion ended after the Battle of Batoche. Riel was captured and taken to Regina. He faced a trial for the crime of high treason.

Despite many pleas for mercy, Riel was convicted and executed.

His execution took place on November 16, 1885. This event had a massive impact on the nation. It caused long-lasting tension between different ethnic and religious groups. Many Francophones felt a sense of deep alienation from the government. Today, historians continue to study Riel's complex life. Some see him as a prophet and hero. Others see him as a religious fanatic who challenged the state.
